Bob’s Favourite Spins of 2021
In no particular order... ok a bit of an order
Jeff Mills & Rafael Leafar - The Override Switch. Brilliant mixing! Imagine a lucid journey through percussive jazz with breakbeats. The River Runs Five Ways leaves a earworm trail the size of Shai’Hulud.
The KLF Solid State Logic - because I say so. The justified ancients of Monitor Units are gonna rock you.
Cabaret Voltaire - Shadow of Fear - Sentimental pick. One cannot quantify the influence this single band had, ranging from the bumpin 808 dance vibe, Detroit, eclectic electo jazz, industrial, and R&B. This album is such a throw back and somewhat fitting given the dystopia+hysteria of today. Rest in Power Richard H. Kirk. There will never be another.
Sufjan Stevens- Convocations... its ok but oddly similar to Enos Opus Music for Installations released a few years back (see my previous 2018 review)
Umwelt - Fear of a Dark Planet EP. They have a dark vibe for sure, but there is something a bit more sinister about this EP.
Fantastic Man - Cloud Management. Simple beats that can fit in any setting. It has a poppy sound but with a sprinkle of weird that makes it interesting. Lounge Wizard is such a killer chill vibe
The Armed - Ultrapop. Relentless tunes. All Futures is a scream riot with a pop backbone.
Floating Points & Pharoah Sanders (And the London Symphony Orchestra). Something great happened in this album.
Madlib - Sound Ancestors ... definitely one of the top 5 Madlib albums in my books. The sound production on Riddim Chant tho...! Is there anyone who mashes up beats better?
Hummanoid - Stakker Hummanoid... remixes of the acid house classic by Autechre and Luke Vibert... well it’s just nasty and old school.
Notables:
Artefact - Days Bygone. Incredibly consistent album. Half Speed Tape is a beautiful drone.
Modest Mouse - The Golden Casket. Always welcoming vibe. Really like the production in Transmitting Receiving.
Mu-ziq & Mrs Jynx - Also a very well mannered electronic album
Israel Vines - Voices - Some amazing sound production!
